Kuching Interschool Debating Championship 2018: Results and Motions

Over the weekend. INTRTXT alongside Sri Sarjana Tuition Centre hosted the Kuching Interschool Debating Championship.

Over the course of three preliminary rounds and a break to semi-finals, the winner of the tournament was SMK Batu Lintang (SMKBL). Runners up were from Kolej Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdillah. Melvin Lee from SMKBL won the Overall Best Speaker Award. The scores from the preliminary rounds of this tournament will be tabulated in the Kuching Debate League for the Asian season.

The adjudication core comprised of Galvin Lee from SMKBL, Ian Dylan Chai from St Joseph's Private School and Terence Aaron Anthony from INTRTXT. The inclusion of upper secondary school students is part of an INTRTXT initiative to train the next generation of adjudicators so they may have the first-hand experience in setting debate motions. In the future, they will be the ones leading the scene and create balanced motions with appropriate burdens for each team.

KIDC was initially started by the SMK Batu Lintang debate club several years back. But this year, they have decided to move it to Sri Sarjana. Hopefully, this wouldn't be the last. Note: The tournament was held at the same time as the Malaysian National Schools Debating Championship (MNSDC). One of the motions in the finals is similar to the one debated at MNSDC. However, that was purely coincidental as the panel decided on the motion several days before it was released there.

Announcement for the Kuching Debate League 2018!!

Hello everyone!

Kuching DebateLeague (KDL) is back. For those who have not heard about KDL, it used to be a mini league with three rounds per day.

But starting last year, INTRTXT decided to use the three round/day format, ran them every month and tabulate the scores at the end of each season to determine the top debaters. For last year’s BP season we sent 4 debaters to the KDU Pro Ams with one team making it to the semi-finals.

This year, we are happy to announce that we will also be tabulating scores throughout the Asian season and send teams to open tournaments for the BP season. The scores however will be based on your top 3 speaker scores. So to qualify, you have to at least attend 3 sessions. However, only secondary school students qualify for this.

For this season however, we will be kicking off things with the preliminary rounds of the Kuching Interschool Debating Championship. That means if you are a participant, your scores will be calculated for this season.

Also, to make sure we have sustainability in our scene, we will be selecting upper secondary school students (Form 4 and above) to be part of our adjudication panel for every “heats.” For the Kuching Interschool, the two debaters selected were Galvin Lee (Batu Lintang) and Ian Dylan Chai (St Joseph’s Private School).

Here are our current dates for KDL. Venues are not confirmed but if your school wishes to host us for a day, we will waive your fees.
